About Ricoh printers

Ricoh is one of the largest office MFP brands globally, mostly invisible to consumers but everywhere in business. The current consumer-adjacent lineup is the IM series (touchscreen MFPs for small to mid office), with the older Aficio, MP, and SP lines still widely deployed. Ricoh acquired Lanier and Savin years ago and rebadges some Ricoh models under those names for specific channels, so identical hardware turns up under three different brand names.

Ricoh product lines

IM (current line)

IM C300 through IM C6500 are the current colour MFP range. IM 350 and IM 430 are mono equivalents. The Smart Operation Panel runs Android and supports third-party apps. This is what Ricoh sells today.

MP and SP (legacy)

MP series are the predecessor to IM, MFPs from roughly 2010 to 2020. SP series were single-function laser printers. Both are still in heavy use and still get firmware updates. SP 3710, SP 5300, and SP C840 are common.

Pro

Pro C5300, Pro C9500, Pro VC70000 are light production printers. Sit between an office MFP and a digital press. Most home and small office users will never see one.

Aficio

The line name Ricoh used through 2014. Aficio MP and Aficio SP units are still working in offices everywhere. Toner is still made by both Ricoh and third parties.

Common Ricoh printer problems

SC error codes (SC542, SC543, SC545, SC899)

Ricoh service codes starting with SC indicate a hardware fault that needs power cycling or service. SC542 through SC545 are fuser-related (waiting too long to warm up, temperature out of range). Power off, wait 5 minutes, power on. If the code returns, the fuser unit needs replacing or the thermistor is stuck. SC899 is a controller fault, usually clears after a hard reboot. SC990 is a write error to the storage, often the HDD failing on older units.

Network scan to folder (SMB) failing

Older Ricoh MFPs (MP and Aficio era) only support SMBv1, which Windows 10 and 11 disable by default. You either need to enable SMBv1 on the receiving Windows machine (security risk) or use scan to email or scan to FTP instead. IM series printers from 2019 onward support SMBv2 and SMBv3.

Touchscreen lag on IM series

The Smart Operation Panel runs Android and can slow down if too many apps are installed or the home screen has many widgets. From the touchscreen, go to Settings, User Tools, Apps Manager, and remove unused apps. A full restart of the panel (hold the home button for 10 seconds, choose restart) usually fixes the lag.

Toner not detected after replacement

Ricoh toner cartridges have an antenna chip for level monitoring. Wipe the chip with a clean dry cloth, reseat the cartridge firmly until it clicks. If the message persists, the toner chip may be defective or your toner is a refurb with an exhausted chip. OEM Ricoh toner almost always works first time. Third-party toner is hit and miss on chip recognition.

Address book lost after firmware update

Ricoh firmware updates have occasionally wiped the address book on IM and MP series. Always export the address book from the embedded web server before updating firmware (Web Image Monitor, Device Management, Address Book, Export). Re-import after the update if needed.

Ricoh drivers and downloads

Ricoh USA drivers are at ricoh-usa.com/en/support-and-download. Global support at ricoh.com. The Ricoh Universal Print Driver (PCL6 or PostScript) covers most current and legacy MFPs and is the recommended install for mixed Ricoh fleets. Search by model number on the rating label sticker, not the front-of-machine name.

What to buy and what to skip

For a small office (5 to 15 people), IM C300 or IM C400 colour MFP covers most needs. For low-volume mono, the SP 3710DNw is a cheap single-function laser still in production. Avoid Aficio era used units unless you can confirm SMBv2 support or are happy scanning to email only. Ricoh consumables are reasonably priced, third-party toner widely available for SP series.

Ricoh printer FAQs

What is the difference between Ricoh, Savin, and Lanier?

Same hardware, different brand labels. Ricoh owns all three and uses Savin and Lanier as channel brands in the US dealer market. A Savin IM C400F is the same machine as a Ricoh IM C400F. Drivers and toner are interchangeable.

Can I print from a phone to a Ricoh MFP?

Yes on any IM series or recent MP series. Use the Ricoh Smart Device Connector app, or AirPrint if your model supports it (most IM and newer MP do). Mopria works on Android. Some Aficio era models do not support either and need printing via a desktop driver.

How long do Ricoh fusers last?

Rated for 100,000 to 300,000 pages depending on model. The fuser is part of the Periodic Maintenance Kit, which a Ricoh service tech will replace at the scheduled interval if you have a service contract. Out of contract, the kit costs $300 to $800 and is user-installable on most models with patience.
