Brother is the brand most often recommended by IT people, mostly because the mono laser MFCs are reliable, the toner lasts, and Brother does not play firmware games with third-party toner. Brother also makes inkjets (the INKvestment Tank line) and some niche product categories like label printers and sewing machines, but most of the printer support traffic concerns the HL and MFC mono lasers and the DCP and MFC inkjets.
Brother product lines
HL (mono laser)
Single-function mono laser printers. HL-L2350DW and HL-L2390DW are the most-sold home and small office mono lasers in the US. Built to run for years with minimal attention.
MFC (multifunction)
Multifunction laser or inkjet (model number tells you which). MFC-L2750DW is the laser equivalent of the HL-L2390DW with added scanner, copier, fax. MFC-J6955DW is the popular A3 inkjet for small offices.
DCP
Multifunction without fax. Identical to the MFC in most other ways. DCP-L2550DW is a common pick if you do not need fax.
INKvestment Tank
Brother's answer to Epson EcoTank. Cartridges feed an internal reservoir, so you get cartridge convenience with two years of ink. MFC-J5855DW and similar.
Common Brother printer problems
Printer offline
Brother lasers handle WiFi reasonably well but will appear offline in Windows or macOS if the printer sat idle and got a new DHCP lease. Give the printer a reserved IP in your router's DHCP settings, then re-add it in Devices and Printers using that IP. This is the single most effective fix for repeated offline status on Brother network printers.
Replace Drum message but the drum is fine
The drum unit and the toner cartridge are two separate consumables on Brother lasers. The toner runs out first, usually every 1500 to 3000 pages, while the drum lasts 12,000 to 30,000 pages depending on model. Brother does not have a sensor that measures drum wear, it counts pages. After a drum reset, the message goes away. To reset the drum counter on HL and MFC models, open the front cover, press OK on the operator panel, choose Drum, press 1 (or Up arrow) to confirm. Exact button paths vary slightly by model.
Wireless setup will not complete
Brother printers struggle with WPA3 and with mesh networks that have band steering enabled. If setup fails, temporarily switch your router to WPA2 only and 2.4GHz only, set up the printer, then switch the router back. Once the printer has joined the network it will usually stay on, but the initial join needs simpler conditions.
Printer wont print
On Brother lasers the first thing to check is the toner cartridge tab. New toner ships with a small tab or seal that needs pulling out before the cartridge will release toner. Second check is the drum unit reset, since a high drum count will block printing on some models. On inkjets, check that all four ink cartridges are installed even if you only need black. Brother inkjets will refuse to print if any cartridge is missing.
iPhone printing not working
Brother supports AirPrint on every WiFi-equipped model from the last ten years. If your iPhone does not see the printer, restart the printer and reboot your iPhone WiFi (toggle airplane mode on and off). If the printer is on a guest network or a different VLAN from the iPhone, AirPrint will not work at all. Move them to the same network.

Brother drivers are at support.brother.com. Search by model. The Full Driver and Software Package includes everything most users need, including the iPrint and Scan utility for network scanning back to a computer.
What to buy and what to skip
For a home or small office mono laser, the HL-L2390DW (single function, fast, cheap toner) or MFC-L2750DW (multifunction with scanner and ADF) are both excellent and have stayed in production for years because they work. For colour at low volume, the HL-L3270CDW. For high-volume colour, look at the higher-end MFC-L8000 series. Skip the cheapest DCP inkjets, those have weak paper handling.
Brother printer FAQs
How long does Brother toner actually last?
Brother quotes toner yield at 5% page coverage, which is realistic for text documents. Expect 1200 to 1500 pages from a starter TN cartridge, 2600 to 3000 pages from a standard, and 4000 to 8000 from a high-yield. Photo-heavy printing will burn through it much faster.
Are Brother printers good for Mac?
Yes. Brother publishes Mac drivers within a few months of every macOS release, including AirPrint support across the network range. The iPrint and Scan app handles full-feature scanning from Mac.
Can I refill Brother toner with third-party cartridges?
Yes. Brother does not block third-party toner the way HP does. Compatible TN-760, TN-227, and similar cartridges work and cost roughly a third of OEM. Quality varies by vendor. Stick with brands that have at least a 90-day satisfaction return.
