Ask the First QuestionAbout Lexmark printers
Lexmark makes mono and colour laser printers and MFPs for the office market. The company spun off from IBM in 1991 and still focuses on mid-volume to high-volume office workgroup machines rather than consumer printers. If you have a Lexmark at home, it is usually an ex-office unit. Most Lexmark support questions come from people inheriting an MS, MX, or CX series machine from a workplace.
Lexmark product lines
MS
Mono laser single-function. MS321, MS421, MS521 are common small-workgroup models. Designed for 50,000 to 100,000 pages a month duty cycle on the larger units.
MX
Mono laser MFP. Print, copy, scan, fax. MX421, MX521 are the workgroup standards. Bigger touchscreen than MS, ADF for scanning, network scan-to-email built in.
CS and CX
Colour laser single-function (CS) and MFP (CX). CS421, CX522, CX625 are common. Same engine quality as MS and MX but with colour toner.
B and MB
Newer entry-level mono and colour MFPs aimed at small offices. B3340, MB3442. Cheaper than MS and MX, lower duty cycle.
Common Lexmark printer problems
Toner cartridge not recognised
Lexmark uses cartridge-region locking on most enterprise models. A cartridge labelled for North America will not work in a European printer and vice versa. Check the region code printed on the cartridge box matches your printer's region. There is no software override.
Wireless setup failing
Lexmark printers default to ethernet. To enable wireless, you usually need to plug into ethernet first, log into the embedded web server at the printer's IP, enable the wireless adapter, then disconnect ethernet. On models with WPS, hold the wireless button until it flashes (3 seconds) then press WPS on the router within 2 minutes.
Paper jams in fuser area
Common on MS and MX after 50,000+ pages. Open the rear door, lift the green fuser lock levers, remove jammed paper. If jams keep happening in the same spot, the fuser is wearing out. Replacement fuser maintenance kits are user-installable on most models and run $200 to $400.
Printer cannot connect to the embedded web server
Lexmark web servers default to HTTP on port 80 plus HTTPS on port 443. If your browser blocks the self-signed certificate, accept the security warning to continue. If the page does not load at all, ping the printer's IP from the same network to confirm it is reachable.
Lexmark drivers and downloads
Lexmark drivers are at lexmark.com/support. Search by model. The Universal Print Driver covers most Lexmark models with one install and is worth using if you support a mixed Lexmark fleet.
What to buy and what to skip
For home use, Lexmark is overkill and overpriced. For a small office (5 to 25 users), MS621 or MX521 mono laser is a great long-term buy with cheap per-page running cost. For higher volume or colour, CX625 or CX730. Avoid the very cheapest B and MB series unless you are confident you will stay under their 25,000 page monthly duty cycle.
Lexmark printer FAQs
Are Lexmark cartridges expensive?
OEM Lexmark cartridges are priced for the corporate market, so yes by consumer standards. Third-party compatible cartridges are available for most popular models. Quality from reputable third-party sellers (Ink Technologies, LD Products) is generally good on mono, mixed on colour.
Does Lexmark support AirPrint?
Most modern Lexmark models support AirPrint over the network for iPhone and iPad printing. Older enterprise models from before 2018 may need a firmware update to enable AirPrint. Check the embedded web server under Network then AirPrint.
Can a Lexmark office printer be used at home?
Yes, with two caveats. Lexmark printers are physically large and loud, more than most home users expect. And the cartridge prices only make sense if you print a lot. Used Lexmark MS321 units off corporate fleet retirement are popular on eBay and work fine for home use if you can put the printer in a utility room.
